The entries speak of "proto-disco" from people such Sly And The Family Stone but in vague terms that don't get to the root of it. Wikipedia also refers to periodic flourishes in the cymbals. Wikipedia states the beat is where a pedal-operated bass drum is hit on each of the four beats (rather than say the second beat as in much rock and roll or third beat as in much reggae). I did a search here and looked at Wikipedia entries on disco and four-on-the-floor, but I can't find anything definitive on the origins of the disco beat.
